  1. Don’t be crazy about becoming #1 of the day. Focusing too much on getting votes can spoil other results, destroys the team’s motivation and just makes you the #1 spammer of the day.
  2. Don’t try to game the system. Product Hunt ranking algorithm is smart, any tricks will work against you.
  3. Don’t approach Product Hunt as a one-time deal. It’s a great community to be a part of!

How Did You Prepare for Product Hunt Launch?

2 days – but we mostly re-used all the promotional materials we got for the global launch. Marketing department in general was responsible for Product Hunt campaign 

Did you ask your friends and partners to vote for your product? What social networks and messaging did you use?

We did. We asked for support on Spark social media profiles, as well as on team members’ personal accounts. We also reached out to our beta testers’ community and asked them to help us out as well. A proper and correct message built-in your product won’t hurt either:)

3 Things to Keep in Mind When Working with Product Hunt

  1. Do blitzkrieg. If you miss a moment (even a few hours), it will be hard to catch up.
  2. Monitor global launches/events. If you launch the same day WWDC takes place or Model 3 launches on PH, good luck with that 🙂
  3. Try to build your own community long before launch. Super early adopters, investors, etc. – when you are launching on PH, you’ll already have bunch of people to support you.

Yes.

What is the secret to a successful Product Hunt launch?

Build a community of people around your idea long before the launch. People were expecting Spark for Mac for over a year. We basically built our Twitter account around them and talked to them every day, getting ideas and sharing sneak-peeks. This helped tremendously when we launched, as those people already felt like they’re a part of the family.

We only messaged a few active users.

3 Things to Keep in Mind When Working with Product Hunt

  1. It’s a community, not a marketplace, so contribute some value first (upvote, comment, test new products).
  2. Don’t force people to upvote and support. That way, you’ll see an actual market reaction.
  3. Accept negative feedback and keep the conversation open. Ask your customers to participate in the chat, if they can.

We keep investing in our community. We will significantly improve the product to showcase a leveled-up Quokka. We will remove all possible barriers that could stop the community from using it.

It’s not a source of free traffic, it’s a foundation for building your product community and validating ideas.

Product Hunt is a one-time deal or can it also help in the long run?

If to say about the global goals, of course, it’s a more one-time deal: a great way to get the first users, first feedbacks, and get some rewards that will help your product in further promotion. If your product is updated frequently, it is also a great way to announce updates.

P.S. we still get traffic from Product Hunt (not much, but…)

3 Things to keep in mind when working with Product Hunt? 

1) Launch your product on Product Hunt no earlier than 00:00 (local time in San Francisco).

2) Be careful with votes and comments if you ask a large group to do it (for example, colleagues in your office! (your product may be banned for unnatural growth). Use the different IP (Touch VPN is a great tool for this :))

3) Be ready for criticism.

What are some of the mistakes companies do when launching on PH and how to avoid them?

We made a bad video. After we launched the product, we realized that it would be better to delete the video.

What do you plan to do to improve your PH results?
